In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The lobby leans into earth tones — teak brown, marble grey, ivory white — set against papered walls and a wall-sized black-and-white ink painting of the Cangshan mountains. Our room was a Deluxe King at roughly 35 sq m, with polished parquet floors, a headboard upholstered in indigo-blue Chinese silk, and brass-rimmed Chinese-style lanterns. A sofa sits by the window looking out at all 19 Cangshan peaks as a backdrop. The cream marble bathroom has a separate soaking tub, a rain shower, woody-scented Byredo toiletries, and a Nespresso machine with 4 free capsules a day.
Food and amenities
Ronglu opened in 2017 and got a major refurbishment in 2019, so everything still reads as new — the linens have no fraying and the wood floors carry no scuffs. The restaurant lays out a full Chinese-Western breakfast buffet: Yunnan crossing-the-bridge noodles, ginger glutinous rice balls, cakes, seasonal fruit, eggs cooked fresh to order, and the one you can't skip — hot fried Rushan cheese. The cleanliness score of 9.6 feels earned, and the staff are genuinely keen.
Location and getting there
It sits in Sanwenbi village, about 1.5 km from Dali Old Town — an 18-20 minute walk to the north city gate, or a DiDi ride for just 8-10 yuan. The standout is the free on-site parking, which is a real plus if you're driving a rental around Erhai Lake or out to the Three Pagodas Temple. Nearby is the old Bai village of Xizhou Town, a 25-minute drive away, where you can try the local fried flatbread and, in spring, photograph the canola flower fields.
Things to know before booking
The trade-off here is the location: you're in Sanwenbi village, about 1.5 km from the Old Town rather than right inside it. Prices also run higher than stays sitting directly in the Old Town quarter. And because the scores are so high, rooms fill quickly in high season — book ahead if your dates are fixed.
Our take
Ronglu fits couples chasing an upscale Dali honeymoon, families driving themselves who want safe parking, and business travelers who'd rather have a quiet private space away from the tourist noise. In a budget of about $69 to $137 a night, we think it's the best 4-star value in town. A real review score of 9.7 doesn't come easily — this one gets our full recommendation.
