In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Sala Rattanakosin runs only about 15 to 17 rooms, so the place stays quiet and private. The rooms are clean and pared-back, and every one has air-con, a flat-screen TV, a tea and coffee maker and an en-suite bathroom. We asked for a river-facing room, pulled back the curtains, and there was Wat Arun standing tall across the water — a view you will struggle to find from any other hotel in Bangkok.
Food and amenities
What makes Sala Rattanakosin special is the Amorosa rooftop bar and The Deck restaurant, both looking out on Wat Arun in full panorama. Guests like to head up for a drink as the sun drops and catch that view of the temple and the river. There is free Wi-Fi, and the concierge can help arrange tours.
Location and getting there
The hotel sits on a Tha Tien soi on Rattanakosin Island, by the Chao Phraya, behind Wat Pho. Step out of the lane and you hit the Tha Tien pier and a real old-town neighborhood. From there it is a few baht on the cross-river ferry over to Wat Arun. Walk about 4 minutes to Wat Pho, 9 minutes to the Grand Palace, and 4 to 5 minutes to MRT Sanam Chai.
Things to know before booking
This is a small hotel — under 20 rooms — and it books out fast, so set your dates early. The Amorosa rooftop gets crowded in the evening because it is one of the area's favorite sunset spots. And it does cost more than a standard guesthouse over in the Khao San area.
Our take
Sala Rattanakosin Bangkok fits couples best, and anyone who wants a boutique with real character in the old town. If you want to wake up to a Wat Arun view and walk to Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, this is an opening pick we are happy to stand behind.
