Sand Sea Resort Railay

Sand Sea is opening your door straight onto West Railay at a price you can actually swing — the location and the warm Thai staff matter more here than how fresh some of the rooms are.

In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Sand Sea Resort Railay has been open since 1991, which makes it the oldest resort on the peninsula — and it sits in a superb spot, right on the neck of the headland between West and East Railay, so you can walk out your door and reach either beach in 1 to 3 minutes. The resort runs to 130+ rooms and bungalows across several styles, from a 25-square-metre Standard Garden Bungalow at about $70 up to a beachfront bungalow on the sand and a 70-square-metre Honeymoon Pool Villa with a private jacuzzi. The look is genuine southern Thai — hip roofs, teak walls, rattan-and-wood furniture. The most recently renovated rooms in the main building feel spotless, with Wi-Fi and air-con working fine, while the older bungalows can look dated. Real reviews on Trip.com (9.1/10) mostly agree on two things: the Thai staff are very friendly, and the location is worth more than the price.
Food and amenities
Sand Sea has 3 swimming pools of moderate size — a main pool in the middle of the resort, a quieter adults pool, and a shallow kids pool, all shaded by big trees with sun beds around them. The main restaurant is the Sunset Restaurant, sitting right on West Railay at the best sunset spot on the beach, serving Thai, Western and fresh seafood at a reachable $7-14 a head — cheaper than the pricier spots up on Railay Walking Street. The Sunset Bar runs 16:00-23:00 with a happy hour from 17:00 to 19:00. Breakfast is a simple buffet — fried eggs, congee, pad thai, bread, fruit, coffee and tea — not a big 5-star spread, but tasty and fresh. The resort runs tours to Phi Phi and the Hong Islands from about $26 a person. There is no motorbike rental, since Railay has no roads at all. Air-con and in-room Wi-Fi round it out. Overall score: 9.0/10.
Location and getting there
The location is the heart of Sand Sea — it sits on the neck of the Railay headland, at the pivot between West Railay and East Railay. It is a 1-minute walk to West Railay Beach, 3 minutes to East Railay (with its Walking Street and massage shops), and 10 minutes to Phra Nang Beach, which is widely called the prettiest beach in Thailand — actually faster than starting from Rayavadee. The West Railay pier is right in front of the resort, a 1-minute walk, and from there it is a 15-minute longtail to Ao Nang or about an hour to Phi Phi. Railay is a headland with no cars and no roads, so the whole area stays quiet, and you can walk anywhere on the peninsula in under 15 minutes. Krabi Airport is 25 km away plus the boat, about an hour in total, and the combined car-and-boat fare from the airport runs roughly $23-34.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. First, this is an old resort and some rooms look dated — it has been open 30-plus years, and the older bungalows and un-renovated wing rooms can smell damp with tired furniture. The fix is to ask for a Beachfront Bungalow, Deluxe Pool View, or a main-building room renovated in 2023-2024 when you book; the $14-43 per night bump is well worth it. Second, Wi-Fi across Railay is unreliable because the headland is hard to reach, and the Wi-Fi and mobile signal drop out in some rooms — if you need to work as a digital nomad, this is not the place, and you would be better off in Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Third, the wet season (May-October) brings rougher swell, and longtail boats are sometimes cancelled, which can snag your runs to and from Ao Nang — keep a backup plan.
Our take
Sand Sea Resort Railay is the best-value way to sleep on Railay without paying Rayavadee prices — from about $70 you get a clean room in a location you cannot find anywhere else, with white sand a step outside your door. If your trip is about slow days on Railay — waking up a minute from the beach, eating by the water at sunset, and not sweating how old a room feels — this is the right fit. If you expect spotless luxury rooms or fast Wi-Fi for work, look elsewhere. Overall we give it 9.0/10, best for travelers who want a real Railay stay without the Rayavadee bill.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The location is the whole point — sitting on the neck of the headland, the resort puts both West Railay (1 minute) and East Railay (3 minutes) within an easy walk, and Phra Nang Beach is only 10 minutes on foot.
- Reviews consistently call out the Thai staff as warm and helpful, which is a big part of why Trip.com scores it 9.1/10.
- Rooms come in several styles, from a 25-square-metre Standard Garden Bungalow at the entry price up to a 70-square-metre Honeymoon Pool Villa with a private jacuzzi, so you can match the room to your budget.
- The Sunset Restaurant sits right on West Railay at the best sunset spot on the beach, serving Thai, Western and fresh seafood at $7-14 a head — far cheaper than the restaurants up on Railay Walking Street.
- With prices from about $70 a night, this is the cheapest credible way to actually sleep on Railay rather than commuting in from Ao Nang.
- It is an old resort and it shows. The property has been open 30-plus years, and the older bungalows and un-renovated wing rooms can feel damp and dated. The fix is to ask for a Beachfront Bungalow, Deluxe Pool View, or a main-building room renovated in 2023-2024 — the $14-43 per night premium is worth it.
- Wi-Fi and even mobile signal are spotty across Railay because the headland is hard to reach, and some rooms drop the connection entirely. If you need to work, this is not the place — look at Ao Nang or Krabi Town instead.
- In the wet season (May-October), longtail boats are sometimes cancelled when the swell picks up, which can strand your trips to and from Ao Nang. Build in a backup plan.
