In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The hotel opened in 2009 and fills floors 27 to 37 of Marunouchi Trust Tower Main — 11 floors, more than 130 metres up. The high-speed lift took us from the ground floor to floor 28 in about 30 seconds, and the doors opened onto a lobby with a crystal waterfall chandelier made from nearly half a million beads, plus glass walls looking straight at the Imperial Palace. There are 200 rooms and suites, all starting at 50 sqm — the largest in the Tokyo Station luxury group. Every room has full glass walls, finished in cherry wood and velvet, with a marble bathroom, a deep soaking tub, a separate shower and heated tile floors. The east-facing Deluxe Premier Tokyo View rooms catch Tokyo Skytree glowing blue at night.
Food and amenities
The Chi Spa is done in Tibetan style, with wide treatment rooms that genuinely feel like a temple, and the 20-metre indoor pool stays open 24 hours — early reviews mention finding just two other guests around 6:30am. Nadaman serves kaiseki on the upper floors, Piacere does fresh pasta, and the Lobby Lounge pours afternoon tea (book ahead — it runs around $48). Guests on a Horizon Club room get the floor-37 lounge with free breakfast, afternoon tea and a cocktail hour, which adds up fast compared with paying in the restaurants. Wi-Fi is free and the fitness centre is open 24 hours.
Location and getting there
It's a 1-minute walk from Tokyo Station through an underground tunnel, so you never step outside. The Imperial Palace is 8 minutes on foot, KITTE is 6 minutes, and Ginza Mitsukoshi is about 12 minutes. The Trip.com score sits at 9.4.
Things to know before booking
This is top-tier money: rooms start around $535 a night and climb past $1,700 for the best suites, so it's a special-occasion stay. Because the hotel shares the Marunouchi Trust Tower with offices, you ride a lift up to floor 28 before you reach the lobby. And the restaurants and spa are priced to match the brand — that afternoon tea is around $48 a person.
Our take
Shangri-La Tokyo is the one to book for a honeymoon, a celebration or any couple who want the best of Tokyo. If this is the trip where you splurge once, this is the answer — the largest rooms, the best spa and the best views in the whole Tokyo Station area.
