In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
We close the list with the budget Tibetan boutique — Shangri-La Moon Boutique Hotel. The whole place is built around a small courtyard behind an old wooden gate, with a 100-year-old peach tree in the middle and pink petals drifting onto the stone floor — atmosphere the price tag really can't account for, given rooms start at roughly $29 a night. The buildings are red-painted Tibetan pine frames under a wood-shingle roof. Our Standard room ran 25 sqm with a window onto the courtyard, a queen bed, clean linen, light pine walls, and a small desk and chair.
Food and amenities
The biggest surprise is the kit. Every room has underfloor heating, a humidifier, high-speed fibre Wi-Fi and an in-room oxygen machine — genuinely rare at the 3-star level up on this plateau. Bathrooms use Kohler fittings with a split wet-and-dry layout. The restaurant serves yak hotpot, tsampa, Tibetan dumplings and highland barley wine, and airport pickup is free. Real guests score it around 9.0, and at about $29 a night that's roughly the price of four Starbucks coffees back home.
Location and getting there
It's on Jinlong Road, dead-centre in Dukezong Old Town, at the foot of Guishan Park. You're about 200 metres from the park and 350 metres from the giant prayer wheel — billed as the world's largest at 60 tons — and the Big Buddha temple, which makes it a great base for slow evening wanders through the old streets. Moonlight Square is 250 metres away, and Diqing Airport is 7 km out.
Things to know before booking
This is a 3-star, so the amenities stay basic — fine for the price, but not a resort. Sitting in the middle of the old town means the streets get busy with tourists through the day. And you're up on the plateau here, so build in time to adjust to the altitude before doing anything strenuous.
Our take
Shangri-La Moon Boutique Hotel is the best answer for budget, backpacker and solo travellers who want to sleep in the heart of the old town in a real Tibetan courtyard. We voted it the best "low spend, full atmosphere" stay in Shangri-La — a worthwhile way to close the list.
