In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Rooms at Shantara Resort Port Douglas (formerly the Shantara Apartments) are 1-2 bedroom apartments, each with a full kitchen, a separate living area and a balcony. Every unit has its own washer-dryer, which earns its keep on a longer stay. Some are poolside apartments that open straight onto the water — the ones couples tend to ask for. There is also a Spa Suite treatment that can be done in your room. The whole place reads more like a quiet spa retreat than a town hotel, and that is the point.
Food and amenities
The heart of the resort is an oval outdoor pool set in a tropical palm garden, ringed with sun loungers, plus a Jacuzzi that stays open all day and is at its best in the evening. There is a shared BBQ area, free Wi-Fi throughout and free parking. The detail that sets Shantara apart from its neighbours is a dive-gear storage room with a shower: after a day out with Quicksilver or Sailaway you can rinse your equipment and change before heading back upstairs, instead of dragging wet gear into the apartment.
Location and getting there
Shantara sits on Davidson Street in the centre of Port Douglas, the tropical gateway town for the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. It is a 5-minute walk to Four Mile Beach and about 400 m to Macrossan Street, the main strip of restaurants and cafes — close enough that you can leave the car parked the whole stay. Reef boats leave from Sugar Wharf a short distance away.
Things to know before booking
This is an adults-only (15+) resort, so it does not accept younger children — rule it out if you are travelling as a family with little ones. It sits about 400 m from the beach, a touch farther from the sand than By the Sea. And it is a small resort, so it fills quickly in the dry season; book ahead to lock in your dates. Real guests rate it 8.8/10 on Trip.com — high for a place this size.
Our take
Shantara Resort Port Douglas is the one we would book for a couple, a honeymoon, or any grown-up trip that wants quiet, no kids and a central address — with a Jacuzzi in the garden and a dive room ready for the reef. If this Port Douglas trip is about celebrating something or just keeping the noise down, this is the stay we rate most. Rates start from about $158 a night.
