In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Sheraton Grand Hiroshima sits closer to JR Hiroshima Station than any other hotel in the city — a 60-second walk from the North Exit to the lobby, all indoors and rain-free, which makes it the easiest base for anyone arriving by Shinkansen (the Nozomi from Tokyo runs about 3 hours 50 minutes). The two-story lobby has a lounge, bar, and concierge, and the staff speak fluent English. Our test room was a Deluxe King at 35 sqm on floor 18, South-facing, looking out over the whole city with Mt. Misen in the distance. The Sheraton Signature bed measures 200x200 cm, there's a four-option pillow menu, a marble bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and a separate rain shower, a Toto Washlet, a Nespresso machine, and Maiko matcha. Even pressed against a train station, the room stays dead quiet — the triple-glazed windows genuinely work.
Food and amenities
The heart of the place is the 18-meter indoor pool on floor 3 — rare in Hiroshima, where most hotels skip a pool entirely. It runs 06:00 to 22:00 at a warm 28°C, with a jacuzzi and sauna, and plenty of guests swim a few laps before heading out for the day. Breakfast is a buffet at Bridges Restaurant for JPY 3,500 (about $24), with a Japanese section (ramen and okonomiyaki cooked to order), a Western spread, and fresh fruit. If you're Marriott Bonvoy Silver or higher it's free — and since the membership costs nothing to join before you arrive, that's an easy win.
Location and getting there
Being attached to the station means you can reach everything easily. For Peace Memorial Park, take the Hiroden tram number 2 from the station to Genbaku Dome-mae (the Atomic Bomb Dome) — about 15 minutes for JPY 220 (roughly $1.50) — then walk through to the Children's Peace Monument and the Peace Memorial Museum, a solid 3 hours all in. For Miyajima Island, ride the JR Sanyo Line 25 minutes to Miyajimaguchi Station, then the JR Ferry 10 minutes across, with a JR Pass covering the whole trip — the Floating Torii up close is worth the early start.
Things to know before booking
The trade-off for the station-side location is distance from the sights: Peace Park is 2 km away, so plan on that 15-minute tram each way rather than a morning stroll. Rates also run about twice what a nearby business hotel charges, so you're paying a real premium for the address and the 5-star service. And if you're not a Bonvoy member, the JPY 3,500 breakfast (around $24 a head) adds up fast over a multi-night stay — worth signing up for free, or eating downstairs at ekie instead.
Our take
The Sheraton Grand Hiroshima is the best pick for travelers arriving by Shinkansen — a 1-minute walk to the train, 35 sqm rooms, an indoor pool, and Marriott Bonvoy, everything a 5-star should have. The 9.0/10 across 1,500+ reviews backs that up. At $149 and up, it's the right call for couples, families, and business travelers using Hiroshima as a base for Miyajima and 2 to 3 days at Peace Park — the location and service earn their keep.
