In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Shinagawa Prince Hotel is the largest hotel in the Shinagawa district — and arguably one of the biggest in Tokyo, with more than 3,600 rooms split across four towers: the Main Tower, East Tower, West Tower and Annex Tower. It scores 8.0/10 from real guests. Rooms come in a wide range of sizes, from a 22 sqm Twin Standard up to large suites. High floors in the East Tower look out over Tokyo Bay, while Main Tower rooms are the handier choice since they sit closest to the lobby and the main facilities. Most reviewers praise the cleanliness and the location, though some find the rooms a touch small for the price.
Food and amenities
This is where the hotel earns its keep. The Epson Aqua Park Shinagawa aquarium is open daily and runs a dolphin show, glowing jellyfish and exhibits of all kinds of fish — a real hit with kids. The 80-lane bowling alley stays open late, and there are 13 restaurants covering just about every style, plus a supermarket and convenience stores inside the complex. Add a cinema and two swimming pools and you have a property you genuinely never need to leave.
Location and getting there
It is a 3-minute walk from Shinagawa Station's East exit — about as convenient as it gets. The JR Yamanote Line takes you anywhere in Tokyo, the Shinkansen runs direct from the station, and the Keikyu Line reaches Haneda Airport in 15 minutes. There are plenty more shops and restaurants around the hotel if 13 in-house options somehow are not enough.
Things to know before booking
The rooms run fairly small for what you pay in this district, so set your expectations on space. The complex is huge, which means that depending on your tower you may have a long walk from your room to the facility you came for. And it gets very busy on weekends and holidays — expect crowds at the aquarium, the restaurants and the lifts. The pool on the 40th floor of the East Tower has the best views but only opens in summer.
Our take
Shinagawa Prince Hotel is the obvious pick for families with kids who want plenty to do, and for travelers who value having everything in one place. From about $126 a night, it is good value for what you get this close to the station.
