In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Silks Place Taroko is a comfortable resort tucked deep in Taroko Gorge at Tianxiang, about 40 minutes by car from Xincheng station past steep marble cliffs and the turquoise Liwu river. It doesn't feel like a city hotel — the air is cool, and you hear water and birds instead of traffic. The lobby leans on wood and stone tones, with green mountains in every direction. Guests tend to book the Mountain View room at around $243, roughly 40 sqm, with a firm, well-judged king bed, warm wood tones, and a sofa by the window for the view. The part that got our whole team excited is opening the curtain in the morning to a full pane of marble cliffs and forest. The bathroom splits wet and dry, everything's clean, and it's genuinely quiet — at night you hear only the distant stream, and you sleep well.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is a buffet at the Wellspring restaurant, with Taiwanese, Chinese and Western dishes — congee, dim sum, fresh fruit, fresh coffee. It isn't fancy but it's fresh and complete, and it sets you up well before a hike. Dinner brings a Chinese set menu from the hotel that's solid and generously portioned. The highlight is the rooftop pool and hot tub with a 360-degree view of the gorge — reviews say soaking there in the evening after a hike is the best part of the day. There's also a spa, a DIY craft corner for kids, and guided hikes you can sign up for from check-in.
Location and getting there
This is the strongest card — the hotel sits at Tianxiang in the middle of the gorge, a few minutes' walk from the surrounding trailheads and Xiangde Temple. Big-name stops like Swallow Grotto and the Eternal Spring Shrine sit along the way in, easy to pull over for. From Xincheng (which many people call Taroko Station) it's about a 40-minute drive in. We'd rent a car or book the hotel shuttle, since public transport inside the gorge is limited and inflexible. Hualien City is about 25 minutes away.
Things to know before booking
Rooms start at about $243 a night, the highest in this article — fair for the location, but worth knowing. It's deep in the gorge, around 40 minutes from the station, so without a car you're relying on booking the shuttle ahead. And mobile signal is patchy in parts of the gorge, so expect limited internet once you leave the hotel.
Our take
Silks Place Taroko is the stay we'd recommend most if you're coming to Taroko for the gorge itself. It scores 8.9/10 on real reviews — a location in the middle of the park you can't get anywhere else, a rooftop pool over the cliffs, and Silks group service. It's best for couples and families who'll pay more for the convenience and the setting. If the budget stretches and you want to wake up to marble cliffs, this is the answer.
