Rooms and decor

Rooms here run small and tidy, in the usual Sotetsu Fresa Inn mold. The Single Compact starts at 14 sqm, but the one to book is the Semi-Double at 18 sqm for $75 (about $75) — noticeably roomier for a small jump in price. The 122×195 cm bed is firm without being hard, and the linens are fresh and clean. Decor is light brown and cream, plain rather than plush: a one-seat sofa, a small work desk, a 32-inch TV, a mini-fridge, a kettle, and free tea and coffee. The unit bath is a compact 2.5 sqm with a Toto Washlet and travel-size Pola Aroma toiletries. Wi-Fi runs at 100 Mbps — plenty for work — and the room stays dead quiet.

Food and amenities

There's no restaurant on site, just a small 30 sqm cafe-lounge — coffee at $2 (about $2.40), snacks at $3, sandwiches at $5. It's a place to grab something on the way out, not a destination meal. Breakfast in the cafe is $10 (about $10): two onigiri, miso soup, grilled salmon, raw egg, vegetables, and coffee — a fair, well-portioned plate. For anything else, walk the 2 minutes to Yokohama Station, where Sotetsu Joinus and the Sky Building pack in 200+ restaurants, from $5 ramen up to a $24 (about $24) wagyu lunch.

Location and getting there

The entrance is easy to miss — a narrow doorway about 4 metres wide, past a Lawson and a Starbucks, opening into a grey-blue-and-white lobby with self check-in machines and staff on hand. From there, Yokohama Station does all the work. Sotetsu Joinus sits right under the station with 200+ shops, and Bay Quarter Yokohama — a cinema and 60 restaurants — is a 1-minute walk. The Sotetsu Line at the door runs 35 minutes to Shonandai, where you switch to the Odakyu Romancecar for a 50-minute ride to Hakone-Yumoto — about 1.5 hours total. Next morning, JR Yokosuka Line reaches Kamakura in 25 minutes. You can run both day trips without ever lugging your bags.

Things to know before booking

The rooms are small — the entry tier starts at 16 sqm, standard business-hotel territory, so don't expect to spread out. There's no pool, spa, or restaurant on the property; the cafe-lounge is the whole extent of the amenities. And because the hotel sits on the station side rather than the waterfront, you get no bay view like the Minato Mirai hotels offer. None of that is a surprise at this price, but go in knowing what you're trading away.

Our take

The Sotetsu Fresa Inn Yokohama-Higashiguchi is the cheapest room on our Yokohama list — $65–75 (about $65-75), roughly 25% under the Daiwa Roynet and about a quarter of what the 5-star Minato Mirai hotels run. Add a 2-minute walk to Yokohama Station's East Exit and the Sotetsu Line for Hakone, and you've got a smart, no-drama base.
