In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The Riverview Deluxe runs about 32 sqm and was redone in the 2023 renovation. You walk in to a King bed facing a big window that looks straight out at the Tuojiang River — firm-but-soft mattress, clean white linens, and a bathroom with a separate shower and dry zone. Hot water comes through strong, the toiletries have a light, easy scent, and you get a Smart TV, a capsule coffee machine, a small fridge, and 2 free bottles of water a day. Guests say the real highlight is leaving the curtains open and waking to the sound of the water and the wooden oars of the gondola boats — the kind of thing that gets you out of bed early.
Food and amenities
The in-house restaurant serves proper Hunan food. The dishes to order are the blood tofu (xue doufu) and the steamed river fish with chili — bold and well-seasoned, running $9 to $13 a plate. Breakfast is a small buffet with mantou steamed buns, congee, eggs, vegetables and soy milk for about $7 a head. Staff speak basic English but handle a translation app well, so communication isn't an issue. Real review scores — 9.7 on Trip and 9.4 on Agoda — line up with how consistent the service feels.
Location and getting there
The location is the whole pitch. Step out the door and it's 5 minutes to Hongqiao Bridge, the town's signature landmark, another 3 minutes to the stepping-stone bridge, and a bit further to the South Gate (Nanhuamen). At night the red lanterns all light up at once and lay a long ribbon of gold across the water for hundreds of metres. Guests head up to the hotel's rooftop for the high-angle shot — it's one of only a few places in Fenghuang with an open roof deck.
Things to know before booking
The starting price, around $63 a night, is the highest on this list — fair for a 5-star room in this spot, but worth knowing. The old-town riverside is lively in the evening, so don't expect it dead quiet around the hotel after dark. And rooms sell out fast in high season, so lock in your dates early if they're fixed.
Our take
Sulv Lianhua really is our "open the list with the best" pick. It suits couples on a honeymoon, families who want a roomy spot with a good view, and anyone who'd rather not lug bags far. If your budget tops out around $129 a night and you want the river view, the central location and a real 5-star room all at once, this is the answer. Book through Agoda or Trip.com for the best rate, and ask for a river-facing room at check-in.
