In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The 6-bed mixed dorm runs $18 a night — a 12-square-metre room with three sets of wooden bunks, each with a privacy curtain, power outlet, USB, a reading light and a locker under the bed. Sheets come clean, the pillows are firm, and the two shared bathrooms have strong hot showers with free Mediheal (Korean) toiletries. The 4-person family room is 20 square metres at about $85, with one king plus two singles, an en-suite bathroom, a fan and air-con — a fit for a family of four or four friends.
Food and amenities
The heart of Sunny Hill is the communal kitchen on the ground floor — a 25-square-metre white-and-wood room with a 4-burner stove, dishwasher, microwave, a 400-litre fridge, a coffee maker and a juice blender, all free 24 hours; you just wash your own dishes. Guests grab pork, mixed vegetables, kimchi and rice from Mangwon Market a short walk away and cook bibimbap in it, and reviewers mention Mr. Park wandering over to show them how to season the gochujang for a more authentic taste.
Location and getting there
The yellow-and-white building sits a 6-minute walk from Hongik University Station, with Mangwon Market close by for fresh groceries. Mr. Park worked in LA for 10 years and opened the hostel in 2018; spend a couple of hours with him and he will steer you to spots that never make a guidebook — the Ihwa Mural Village graffiti district, the old Bukchon Hanok Village, the blue container-style Common Ground mall, and local restaurants you will not find on Naver Map. He will print directions for you for free.
Things to know before booking
There is no rooftop terrace here, and the building is older than CLEO and Inno, so it feels less modern. The 6-bed dorm is on the small side at 12 square metres, which puts the bunks close together. If a sharp design property is what you are after, this is not it — Sunny Hill trades polish for warmth.
Our take
This is the homiest hostel of the group — a big self-catering kitchen, Mr. Park as a personal guide, a family room for four, and a friend's-place feel. The 8.4/10 score across 1,800+ reviews backs that up, and dorms from $18 make it good value. Best for small families, groups of four and anyone who likes to cook and wants to feel at home rather than be sold a pretty photo.
