Sunstar Alpine Hotel Grindelwald

Sunstar Alpine is the family pick of the list — closest thing to a kids' base camp near the Männlichen Gondola, with an indoor pool to burn off a rainy afternoon.

In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The family setup is the real draw here. The family rooms are roomy enough for four, and some come with a separate bedroom for the kids — the kind of layout that saves a holiday. The look is classic Swiss-alpine rather than designer, warm and comfortable but not the place you book for the Instagram shot. If contemporary styling matters to you, it's worth knowing going in.
Food and amenities
Breakfast is a buffet that covers both Swiss and international plates, with a pancake station aimed squarely at the kids. Choose half-board and you get a 4-course dinner in the main restaurant, leaning on Swiss classics like Rösti, Älplermagronen, and fondue — guests rate both the flavor and the portion sizes. The indoor pool is a good size with a shallow end for children, and there's a sauna and steam room when the adults want to thaw out. A ski-season Kids Club runs December to March.
Location and getting there
You're on the west side of Grindelwald, an 8-minute walk from the Männlichen Gondola — the longest cable car in Europe — which carries you up to the Männlichen top station for the Panorama Trail across to Kleine Scheidegg. Grindelwald Bahnhof is about 8 to 10 minutes on foot, and if you hold a Guest Card the free village bus is yours. The First Gondola sits roughly 1.5 km away, easy enough by bus.
Things to know before booking
The interior runs classic, not modern, so set expectations accordingly. Half-board climbs fast in high season — check it against the half-board rates at the hotels around it before you book. And there's no airport shuttle: from Zurich it's the SBB train via Interlaken Ost, about 3 hours, then a short walk from Grindelwald Bahnhof. Underground parking is available for an extra charge — reserve it with your room.
Our take
If you're traveling with kids, this is the easy call in Grindelwald. The Kids Club, family rooms, kids menu, and indoor pool do the heavy lifting, the Männlichen Gondola is a short walk, and the Sunstar name means a reliable Swiss standard. It won't win on design, but for a family base camp under the Eiger it's hard to beat. Score 8.7/10.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The most family-friendly hotel on this list. There's a ski-season Kids Club, family rooms, a dedicated kids menu, and a shallow pool section the little ones can splash in.
- An 8-minute walk to the Männlichen Gondola, the longest cable car in Europe, which feeds straight into the Panorama Trail toward Kleine Scheidegg.
- The indoor pool is a good size and a genuine lifesaver on a rainy afternoon when the kids need to burn off energy.
- The spa covers the adult side of the trip — sauna, steam room, and massage rooms.
- Part of the Sunstar group, a Swiss chain you can trust to deliver the same standard across its resort towns.
- The interior leans classic rather than contemporary, so it won't feel as fresh or designed as something like Eiger Selfness.
- Half-board pricing climbs quickly through high season. Compare it against the half-board rates at nearby hotels before you commit.
- There's no airport shuttle, so you'll be doing the roughly 3-hour SBB train run from Zurich via Interlaken Ost on your own.

Insider Tips
- Book the family room rather than two adjoining rooms — it's a much better price for a family of four.
- Half-board is worth it if the kids eat too, since the kids menu is folded into the package.
- It's an 8-minute walk to the Männlichen Gondola, but if it's raining you can take the free village bus instead.
