In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Super Hotel is a Japanese budget chain known for clean, tidy, predictable rooms, and the Kabukicho branch is one of the few that offers a true triple — three beds in one room for a couple with a child or three friends travelling together. The rooms are small by any standard, around 16-20 sqm, but they fit three beds and still leave room to slide one large suitcase under the frame. The decor is plain and functional rather than stylish, which is exactly what you'd expect at this price. Bathrooms are compact en-suite units, small but complete.
Food and amenities
The headline perk is the free Japanese breakfast buffet served every morning — miso soup, seaweed, boiled eggs, toast, fruit and coffee. It's simple, but it fills you up before a day out and saves a family roughly $17-26 a day on food. The other thing we like is the in-house onsen, a communal Japanese-style hot bath you can soak in during the evening after a full day of walking, free of charge. Wi-Fi is free, the hotel is non-smoking, and there's free luggage storage outside check-in hours. Parking is limited. Check-in opens at 15:00 and check-out is at 10:00.
Location and getting there
You're in the middle of Kabukicho, Shinjuku's busiest entertainment district, surrounded by ramen counters, izakaya, karaoke, a 24-hour Don Quijote and Golden Gai's tiny bars. It's a 7-minute walk to JR Shinjuku (Yamanote, Chuo, Sobu, Marunouchi and Shinjuku lines) and 3 minutes to Seibu-Shinjuku. From Shinjuku the Yamanote line reaches Ueno, Akihabara, Tokyo Station, Shibuya and Ikebukuro in under half an hour — one of the best transit bases in the city.
Things to know before booking
Rooms built for four are limited; most cap at three, so a family of four often needs two rooms unless they grab a quad early. Kabukicho runs loud until late, and lower street-facing rooms can pick up the noise on weekends — request a higher interior-facing floor. Front-desk staff speak basic English, so anything beyond a standard check-in may need a translation app and some patience. None of this is a dealbreaker at this price, but it's worth knowing.
Our take
Super Hotel Shinjuku Kabukicho suits a family of three or three friends who want to sleep in the heart of Shinjuku's nightlife with a free breakfast and an onsen included. If your trip leans on shopping, late-night eating in Kabukicho and using the Yamanote line as your main way around, this is the most affordable and convenient pick on our list. Real guest ratings sit at 8.2/10 on Trip.com.
