The bed is clean, the sheets carry that standard hotel-laundry smell, and you get a small desk, a tiny fridge, a kettle, and a shower with hot water that runs hot enough. The air-con stays cold all night, and the Wi-Fi is fast enough for online video calls. The room is not large, but it is not cramped for two, and a big suitcase slides under the bed. What you pay for is cleanliness and location, and that is exactly what you get.

Food and amenities

The money you save on the room is money you can spend on food. We put ours toward Din Tai Fung dumplings at lunch, mango shaved ice at Smoothie House in Ximending, and bubble tea from an original shop. Back at the hotel, staff speak English, and there is a 24-hour convenience store right in front of the building for whatever you forgot. Facilities are basic — a service desk, luggage storage, non-smoking rooms — so this is a place to sleep and shower, not to hang around.

Location and getting there

The hotel sits just 300 metres from Taipei Main Station, an easy 4-minute walk. That station is the transport hub for all of Taiwan: the HSR that gets you to Taichung in an hour, the red and blue MRT lines, the TRA train out to Yehliu, and the Airport MRT to Taoyuan Airport. The hotel works as a base for days of sightseeing without flagging a taxi once — many guests walk round by Beimen and pick up the MRT from there. A location like this is the definition of good value.

Things to know before booking

The rooms are plain, with no standout design — if you want character in the room, look elsewhere. The facilities are basic, so there is no lounge, gym, or pool. And the area around the main station is busy and crowded, which is the price you pay for being this central. None of that is a surprise at the rate, but it is worth knowing before you book.

We honestly recommend it to anyone who would rather save their budget for baigan and shopping in Ximending than pay for in-room frills they will only see while asleep.
