In-Depth Review
We open the Tokyo Station list with the stay our team rates highest and finds most memorable — The Tokyo Station Hotel.
Rooms and decor
The hotel has about 150 rooms, decorated in classic European style with 4-5 metre ceilings, crystal chandeliers, heavy drapes and wood furniture in the spirit of the Orient Express. The 27-sqm Comfort Twin on the Marunouchi-guchi side looks out over the plaza and the Marunouchi Building — an Edo-meets-Tokyo scene in the morning and golden light at night. Guests in the Royal Suite get a private 24-hour butler.
Food and amenities
There are more than 10 in-house restaurants and bars, led by the Atrium — a breakfast buffet under a long glass roof running through the middle of the historic building, where you eat a Western or Japanese spread while the morning sun comes down through the glass. The Camellia bar stays open late, serving cocktails in a classic hall. There is also a 24-hour fitness centre and free Wi-Fi throughout.
Location and getting there
The location is the best part. It is a 0-minute walk to every Shinkansen platform — Tokaido, Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku — 3 minutes to KITTE and the Marunouchi Building, 8 minutes to the Imperial Palace East Garden and 12 minutes to Ginza. The Tokyo Monorail gets you to Haneda in about 30 minutes, and the N'EX reaches Narita in about 55. Its Trip.com score of 9.4 is the highest in this list.
Things to know before booking
This is the priciest opener here, starting around $445 a night, so it reads best as a special-occasion stay. Some entry-level rooms run smaller than at modern 5-star hotels, because the original structure had to be kept. And Marunouchi is very quiet after dark — for a bar scene you walk over toward Yurakucho or Ginza.
Our take
The Tokyo Station Hotel suits couples, honeymooners and business travelers who want a once-in-a-lifetime Tokyo experience — a hotel inside a cultural-heritage building that keeps the charm of Meiji-Taisho Tokyo fully intact. If this trip is one you mean to celebrate and you want to start it in a place you will remember for life, this is the opener we recommend most.
