In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The resort has 128 villas across Beach Villas, Water Bungalows and Pool Villas. The favorite is the Pool Villa, where a private pool runs out to a wooden deck and a path down to your own stretch of beach. The design mixes clean modern lines with the tropics — high, open ceilings, and long drapes you can pull back for a panoramic view over the Indian Ocean. We liked the natural materials, wood and stone, set off by clean white fabrics, and the bathroom comes with an outdoor tub for a soak under the stars at night.
Food and amenities
There's Velassaru Spa on stilts over the water, an outdoor pool, a steam room, a gym, and several restaurants and bars. The part we liked best is breakfast: it runs Western, Asian and halal — not easy to find in the Maldives, and our Muslim friends rate it highly. There's a water-sports and dive centre with a house reef off the beach for free snorkeling, plus a sunset cruise that heads out to spot dolphins in the evening. Wi-Fi is free, and real guests score it 9.5.
Location and getting there
Velassaru sits on a private island in South Male Atoll, about 12 km from Male and MLE airport. You get there on the resort speedboat in roughly 25 minutes — no wait for the seaplane, which only flies in daylight. That makes it a strong choice if you land late or just want to save transfer time. One thing to flag: Trip.com now lists it as Niva Velassaru Maldives, a rebrand of the same resort rather than a new one — the service and location are unchanged. The island is long and thin, with white-sand beach all the way around.
Things to know before booking
The resort is now rebranded as Niva Velassaru, so signage and some service details may still be in transition. Rates start from about $307 a night, and on top of that there's a speedboat fee of roughly $180 per person round-trip. There's also no separate kids club, so it works better for couples than for families with young children.
Our take
Velassaru Maldives is at its best for couples and honeymooners who want a 5-star resort close to the airport with no seaplane to deal with. We'd point you here for a short trip, or for anyone whose flight lands in the evening.
