In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
The entry-level Standard Double is 14 sqm for about $17 a night — a contemporary, minimal look in white and brown, with a Queen bed, a small desk and chair, a 32-inch TV, a minibar and a fridge. The air-con keeps up, Wi-Fi runs around 60 Mbps, and the private bath has a hot-water shower with decent pressure plus Cocoon toiletries and towels. Windows look out onto Pham Ngu Lao street, so book a room on the 3rd floor or higher to stay clear of the traffic noise. Step up to the Deluxe Double (around $22) for 17 sqm and a small balcony, or the Family Room (around $36) which sleeps four on a Queen plus two singles.
Food and amenities
Breakfast runs 7am to 10am in the ground-floor common area and it is free — pick pho bo or banh mi, with Vietnamese drip coffee, tea, mixed fruit and a small snack on the side. The staffer Trang makes it to order, and it tastes like the real thing rather than a buffet tray. The other quiet win is the desk: it is staffed 24 hours, so a late check-in after 10pm carries no late fee and you can check out early at any hour — which matters when some Bangkok–Saigon flights land at SGN between 11pm and 1am.
Location and getting there
Vy Khanh sits in the middle of Pham Ngu Lao — a 3-minute walk to Bui Vien Walking Street, 5 minutes to September 23rd Park, 10 minutes to Ben Thanh Market, and 12 minutes to the War Remnants Museum (free for kids, about $1.50 for adults). Trang speaks basic Thai and points people to Pho 2000, the shop Bill Clinton ate at on his 2000 visit to Saigon, five minutes away — the Pho Bo Dac Biet (special) is about $3.70 and comes loaded with beef. The half-day Cu Chi Tunnels tour books through the guesthouse for around $15, roughly 10% under the online price.
Things to know before booking
The entry rooms are a tight 14 sqm, so the cheapest Standard Double fills up fast with two people and luggage — pay up for the Deluxe if you want room to move. The building is older than the newer hostels nearby; it is clean and well run, but not the design finish you get at the newer boutiques. And there is no rooftop or bar on site, so if a pool or a sundown drink is on your list you will be walking to another address in the cluster.
Our take
This is the value play of the Pham Ngu Lao cluster: a real private room from $17, a free Vietnamese breakfast, a 24-hour desk and a 3-minute walk to Bui Vien, scoring 8.6/10 from 1,200+ reviews. Book it if you are a couple or solo traveler who wants a private room on a tight budget — or if you are flying the late Bangkok–Saigon route and just need the door to open at 1am.

- Breakfast runs 7am to 10am — order the pho bo and ask them to make it to order rather than grabbing the set option.
- Ask Trang, who speaks basic Thai, for food tips; she also books the Cu Chi Tunnels half-day tour through the guesthouse for about $15, around 10% under booking it online.
