The town's markets and main restaurant strip are a 5-minute walk, and Cape Byron Lighthouse, marking the easternmost point of mainland Australia, is about 3 km on foot or by bike. Byron Bay has no airport of its own, so you'll fly into Ballina Byron Gateway (BNK), roughly 30 km and a 30-minute drive south.

Things to know before booking

Set your expectations to 3-star. The decor is plain coastal and comfortable, but there are no designer touches, no concierge desk and no spa — none of the resort-style service you'd get higher up the list. The studios are small, so a family should size up to a 1-to-2-bedroom unit. And because the 8.2/10 score and the beach-front location draw a crowd, the cheapest rooms book out fast over the December-to-February summer peak; reserve early.

Waves Byron Bay is the budget close to the list, and it does exactly one thing brilliantly: it puts you 60 seconds from Main Beach for around $130 a night. If this trip is about surfing at dawn, cooking your own dinners and pocketing the difference rather than chasing luxury, this is the pick. Surfers, couples and budget-minded families will get the most out of it — and won't miss the spa.
