The free Resort Shuttle from HTI airport reaches the front door in 5 minutes — a central spot that's handy for both the Marina and Catseye Beach. The building is 3 storeys set in tropical gardens, facing the Marina, and every unit is a full two-bedroom apartment with a separate living room, two bathrooms and a kitchen, sleeping up to 4-6 — a different proposition from Reef View's single hotel rooms.

Food and amenities

Each unit has a complete kitchen — fridge, electric stove, microwave, oven, coffee maker and a full set of cooking gear — which matters a lot on Hamilton Island, where a meal at the resort restaurants runs around $23-40. The smart move is to book a two-bedroom apartment for four, cook breakfast and dinner in, and buy groceries from the IGA Express in Marina Village — that roughly halves your food bill versus eating out every meal. The private balcony faces the Marina, so in the evening you sit and watch the yachts and catamarans from the Whitsundays tours coming back in. It's a different feel from Reef View, which looks out over the Coral Sea; here the boats are your view.

Location and getting there

There's an outdoor pool, a shared BBQ area, golf-buggy parking, free Wi-Fi and a washer/dryer in each unit. The location is the real draw — a 3-minute walk downhill to Marina Village, the island's hub of restaurants, bars, shops and the IGA Express, plus the departure point for the Whitehaven Beach and Heart Reef tours. Another 5 minutes uphill gets you to One Tree Hill, the most popular sunset spot on the island — we went up every evening to watch Whitsunday Passage turn orange and purple at golden hour. Because it's booked through Hamilton Island Resort, guests get full access to the resort's facilities, including free golf buggies, the shuttle and the Pool Network. The 8.2/10 review score is high for an independently owned apartment.

Things to know before booking

The trade-off is the beach: you're about 1.2 km from Catseye Beach, so you'll take a golf buggy or the shuttle down to the sand rather than walking out your door onto it. These are independently owned units, so the service and standards differ from the resort-chain hotels on the island. Our take

Whitsunday Apartments suits families and groups of 4-6 who are staying a few nights, want to cook their own meals to save money, and don't mind taking a buggy to the beach. If this is a two-generation family trip on a budget of roughly $206-430 a night, it's the best-value option on the island for a larger group.
