Real talk: Brisbane is underrated. It's Australia's third-biggest city but feels way more chill than Sydney or Melbourne, and the CBD wraps around a horseshoe bend of the river with stuff like the South Bank lagoon pool (yes, with actual sand), the Gallery of Modern Art, and the Howard Smith Wharves rooftop bars under Story Bridge. You get Sydney-style riverside vibes for about half the price. We pulled 10 hotels in the central Brisbane river loop. Splurge picks like W Brisbane right on the water, The Westin, and Sofitel Brisbane Central. Design-led mid-range options like The Calile in Fortitude Valley (instant classic) and Quay West Suites. And solid value plays like Mantra on Queen and Ovolo The Valley. All within a 10-minute walk of the river, all rated 8.5+ by real guests. Gold Coast is an hour south, Sunshine Coast 90 minutes north — easy day trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

CBD, South Bank, or Fortitude Valley — where should I actually stay?
CBD for shopping and easy airport-train access. South Bank for the cultural stuff (GoMA, Queensland Museum, the lagoon) and families. Fortitude Valley if you want nightlife and trendy restaurants without taxi rides.
Will I regret skipping the Gold Coast day trip?
If beaches are your thing, yes. The train down takes about an hour and drops you at Surfers Paradise. But if you've got limited time, Brisbane itself plus a Moreton Island cruise is more memorable IMO.
What's Brisbane weather actually like?
Subtropical, so warm year-round. April-October is the sweet spot (mild, dry, 22-26C). Nov-March is hot and humid with afternoon storms. Pack layers — the AC is aggressive everywhere.
Best food experience in Brisbane?
Eat Street Northshore on Friday/Saturday nights (riverside container food market — legit), James Street in Fortitude Valley for boutique dining, and West End for hipster cafes. Brisbane's chef scene punches way above its city size.
Day trips worth doing from Brisbane?
Gold Coast (1 hr south by train), Sunshine Coast + Noosa (2 hr north), Moreton Island day cruise (1.25 hr ferry — sand dunes and dolphins), or Tamborine Mountain (1 hr for waterfalls and rainforest walks).
Where do I read the full Thai review?
Right here — our complete Thai guide has the 2-day Brisbane itinerary, day-trip plans to both coasts, and deeper notes on each hotel's river orientation.
