Look, Hobart is Tasmania's capital and easily one of the most underrated cities in Australia — a historic port on the Derwent River where Sullivans Cove gathers Constitution Dock, Salamanca Market (Saturdays only, get there before 10am), and the sandstone warehouses of Battery Point into one tight walkable waterfront. The MONA ferry leaves from Brooke Street Pier for the 30-min trip up the Derwent to David Walsh's wild underground art museum, and Mount Wellington (kunanyi to locals) looms over the city — 30-min drive to a summit lookout that'll have you bundled up even in summer. We reviewed 10 Hobart hotels covering every style. Luxury icons like MACq 01 — Australia's first storytelling hotel right on the waterfront scoring a stunning 9.6, the Henry Jones Art Hotel in a converted IXL jam factory packed with local art, and heritage 5-star Hadleys Orient. Mid-range gems including Hotel Grand Chancellor with bay views, Somerset on the Pier waterfront apartments, Galleria Salamanca steps from the market, and Customs House Hotel (the waterfront pub with rooms). Plus value picks like Ibis Styles from ~$74/night, Central Hotel, and boutique Macquarie Manor.

The place has since rebranded to The Macquarie Hobart on its own website, though Trip.com still lists it under the old name. With only about 15 rooms, it feels far more like a private home than a hotel: high ceilings, an old timber staircase, and Premier Suites dressed in real antique furniture and four-poster beds. Frequently Asked Questions

Sullivans Cove or Salamanca?
Honestly they're the same walkable waterfront precinct — Salamanca is just the southern edge of Sullivans Cove. Cove-facing hotels get the harbour views; Salamanca-side hotels are 30 seconds from the Saturday market. Either way you walk to Battery Point and the MONA ferry. Pick based on view vs market proximity, not 'which neighborhood.'
Best time to visit Hobart?
November to April for warmest weather and longest daylight. January and February are peak — book ahead or pay through the nose. Dark Mofo (June, MONA's winter festival) and Taste of Summer (late December) draw big crowds and push prices way up but are legit unforgettable experiences.
Day trip to MONA?
The MONA ferry from Brooke Street Pier is the only proper arrival — 30 minutes up the Derwent in the Posh Pit (premium cabin with bar) or general cabin. Allow 4 to 5 hours at the museum, it's a labyrinth. Closed Tuesdays, plan around that.
Climbing Mount Wellington/kunanyi?
Drive 30 minutes from town to the summit lookout — dress warm even in summer (snow possible year-round, no joke). Or do the Pinnacle Track for a half-day hike. Mountain bike tours descend from the top if you want adrenaline. The view across the Derwent on a clear day is next-level.
How do you get from the airport to town?
Hobart Airport (HBA) is about 17 to 18 km from the city center. SkyBus runs to town for around AUD 19.50, or take a taxi/rideshare for about AUD 50. Trip takes 20 to 25 min. No train, so plan accordingly.
Read the full Thai guide?
