Look, the Maldives is one of those bucket-list spots where it's genuinely hard to pick a bad resort — but it's stupidly easy to overpay. Every island is its own self-contained resort, so the place you pick basically IS your whole trip. Get it wrong and you're stuck. We sorted through 10 resorts that actually deliver on the dream: overwater villas with the glass-floor coffee table, house reefs you snorkel right off your deck, and that ridiculous turquoise water you've seen in every honeymoon photo. The lineup covers Hurawalhi (5-star adults-only with the famous underwater restaurant), Veligandu and Velassaru for honeymooners on a slightly tamer budget, Meeru and Vilamendhoo for families who want a real reef, plus Centara Ras Fushi and Bandos for solid 4-star value. Prices range from around $115/night up to $500+ for overwater villas — we'll tell you when it's worth the splurge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Maldives actually worth the money?
If you're going for the overwater villa + honeymoon vibe, yes, totally. The water really is that color and the reefs really are that close. Just don't expect a destination — the resort IS the destination. If you want sightseeing or nightlife, Bali or Thailand makes more sense.
Speedboat or seaplane — which transfer should I pick?
Speedboat is cheaper and runs all day (10-55 mins for near atolls like North Male). Seaplane is pricey but it's a legit scenic flight — only worth it for far atolls like Baa, Lhaviyani, or Ari. Heads up: seaplanes don't fly after sunset, so plan flights carefully.
Should I book all-inclusive or pay as I go?
All-inclusive almost always wins. Meals at private islands run $80-150/person, a glass of wine is $20-40. The all-in package usually saves a couple a few hundred bucks a day and zero bill shock at checkout. Pay-as-you-go only makes sense if you're staying 2 nights max.
When's the best time to go without breaking the bank?
Dry season (Nov-Apr) is peak — clearest water, no rain, highest prices. May-Oct is wetter and windier but 30-40% cheaper, and June-Nov is the window for manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll). Total under-the-radar season if you don't mind some afternoon showers.
Do I need a Water Villa or is a Beach Villa enough?
Honest take: Beach Villa is genuinely fine and saves you a ton. Water Villas are the Instagram moment but you pay 1.5-2x more. If it's a honeymoon, splurge on Water Villa for at least 2 nights and switch to Beach Villa for the rest. Best of both worlds.
Which resort if I'm bringing the kids?
Meeru, Vilamendhoo, and Centara Ras Fushi are the family picks — proper kids clubs, shallow lagoons, and the house reefs are good enough that the kids will actually snorkel. Skip Hurawalhi since it's adults-only.
